Attention Deficit/Attention Deficit with Hyperactivity Disorder

ADD stands for attention deficit disorder.  This disorder is not gender specific although it occurs more frequently in males.  It is estimated that between 3% and 8% of the population suffer from ADD.  The major symptoms of ADD include the following: hyperactivity, impulsiveness, and inattention.  Although these symptoms are common, the diagnosis for ADD arises when these symptoms are seen in all areas of your life and create disruptions.  People who suffer from ADD do not have the ability to sustain attention for long periods of time, become easily distracted, and act or speak without thinking.    
 
ADHD although very similar, refers to attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity.  Although both ADD and ADHD can have many of the same symptoms and problems, there are some distinguishing differences.     
    
ADD Characteristics:

  • Sluggish

  • Honors other’s boundaries

  • Obedient

  • Under-assertive

  • Overly Polite

  • Docile

  • Modest

  • Shy

  • Socially Withdrawn

  • Bonds with others but doesn’t attract friends

 

ADHD Characteristics

  • Physically Hyperactive

  • Impulsive

  • Intrusive

  • Rebellious

  • Bossy

  • Irritation

  • Show Off/Egotistical

  • Attracts friends but doesn’t easily bond

  • More prone toward Oppositional Defiant Disorder or Conduct Disorders


ADHD may be easier to diagnose, lead to earlier diagnosis and therefore earlier treatment.  Either way, if you are having some of these symptoms, we suggest talking to your provider.  Diagnosis of ADD / ADHD involves a comprehensive medical evaluation.
 
Treatment of ADD / ADHD is important!  If untreated, the disorder can have long-term effects with relationships, may lead into other mental disorders like depression, other emotional problems, and decreased self-esteem.  Talk to your provider today.  They will be able to assess your condition, recommend testing, and/or begin treatment.  Your provider may also refer you to a specialist who will work alongside him or her to improve your condition.
